| Students at Bloomsburg University
participate in well over 200 student organizations. Of these the
fast majority are recognized by the Community Government
Association, which assists in funding many activities.
Additionally, a variety of intramural athletics are organized
annually, and there are a number of student advisory boards for
various functions of the university. At the beginning of each
academic year, Student Activities hosts an activities fair at
Kehr Union to allow students, especially incoming freshmen, to
meet with representatives of organizations and consider
participation.
In this section you will find the following:
- How to form a student
organization
- A detailed list of all
clubs and organizations at Bloomsburg University
NOTE: This section is currently being revised.
We apologize for any inconvenience.
How to form a student organization:
To begin, there are two types of student
organizations: co-curricular and extra-curricular. Co-curricular
organizations are those affiliated with academic departments
such as the Forensics Society, Bloomsburg Players, and the
Political Science Student Association. These organizations
generally sponsor activities closely related to their academic
major. Faculty advisors are normally selected by and from within
the academic department. Extra-curricular organizations are
essentially interest groups and are social in nature. Some of
these organizations are the Black Cultural Society, Global
Awareness Society and Chess Club. Advisors can be anyone and are
selected by members of the organization.
The Steps Involved:
Step 1. Discuss initial plans with the
director of Kehr Union, Kehr Union Room 350. (except social
fraternities or sororities who must contact the Greek
Coordinator)
Step 2. Complete and submit a
Petition for Recognition of Student Organization Status
to the Director of Kehr Union.
Step 3. The petition will be reviewed by the
Committee on Student Organizations. Representatives from the
proposed student organization may attend or may be requested to
attend the meeting of this committee during which the petition
is reviewed. The organization will be notified, in writing, of
the action taken by the committee.
Step 4. If the petition of the proposed
student organization is approved, the members of the
organization may begin drafting its constitution. The
organization should follow the
model constitution
(available in the Director’s office, Kehr Union, Room 350) and
Robert's Rules of Order, Revised Edition as closely as
possible.
Step 5. After the
constitution is written in its final form, the organization must
submit seven copies to the Director of Kehr Union from where
they will be distributed to the members of the Committee on
Student Organizations. The Chairperson of the Committee on
Student Organizations may invite the president and/or the
faculty advisor of the proposed organization to attend the
meeting at which the constitution is reviewed for approval.
Step 6. If the constitution is approved
by the senate, the
organization will be notified, in writing, of that action. The
organization will also be notified of all rights and privileges
granted to recognized student organizations.
Step 7. An organization may appeal any action
taken by the Committee on Student Organizations to the Student
Senate.
Step 8. If, for some reason, an approved
student organization becomes inactive or disbands, it must
notify the Director of Kehr Union, Kehr Union Room 350.
Step 9. An inactive organization desiring to
reactivate must petition the Committee on Student Organizations
for active status.
